THE WATCH EDITA guide for Dad
PERSONAL BUYING GUIDEResearch checked · October 31, 2026

A GOOD WATCH. A SENSIBLE PRICE.

Dad, here’s
the shortlist.

You wanted a replica that looks convincing and feels solid. We looked beyond local resellers, into Chinese marketplaces and domestic supplier catalogs, with a $500 ceiling.

The strongest budget pick is a black no-date U1 Submariner. For a closer-to-original finish, my first choice is the VSF 40mm Submariner, with the 39.5mm Planet Ocean as the Omega alternative.

Independent research guide. These are replicas, not genuine watches. We are not a watch shop and do not take payments.

MY ACTUAL RECOMMENDATIONS

Choose the experience you want.

Price and quality are separate questions. Here is where I would put the money.

U1 Submariner
Black, no date

My budget pick with the Miyota 8215 automatic. A recognizable look at a modest price, with compromises in bracelet feel, rotor noise and fine finishing.

03 / CHOOSE OMEGA

VSF Planet Ocean
Black · 39.5mm

≈ $316 watch only · ¥2,100

The closest Omega fit to your preferred size. Black dial, steel bracelet and an automatic movement advertised by the supplier. A strong premium candidate once stock and the total are confirmed.

ALL YOUR ORIGINAL CHOICES

Rank the budget watches.
Then rank the premium ones.

Two independent lists. A strong premium version does not make its cheap counterpart a good buy.

How the rankings and grades work

These are editorial buying judgments for this brief: convincing appearance and bracelet/case feel first, then evidence of movement reliability, fit around 40mm, price and the strength of current sourcing evidence. They are not lab measurements or percentages of authenticity. Unknown movements, conflicting photos, old catalogs and missing quotes lower confidence.

A: strongest fit with comparatively strong build evidence. B: worthwhile candidate with clear compromises. C: obvious styling/function or buying compromises. D: unresolved or poor value; pass until resolved. A budget B is still a budget replica. Rank is overall buying preference within its tier, based on the recommended/default build; changing a movement does not re-grade the whole watch. Price sorting uses your selected movement. Ranks are not a guarantee about a particular unit.

Each style has a budget and premium assessment. Richard Mille has no qualified budget pick and no convincing premium tourbillon under $500; its higher-priced style fallback is shown as a poor choice. We leave that gap visible instead of inventing a bargain.
